Reading games are an excellent means of reviewing and demonstrating understanding of skills taught. Many games can be played in classroom settings; others are for small groups or one-to-one. Go Search, Lotto games, Tic Tac Toe, Word Sorts, and game boards are my favorite types of games for tutoring sessions. Below are several games that are suitable for classroom use. Tic Tac Toe: One of the easiest games to play with a student or to set up at a center is Tic Tac Toe. Words within a phonemic pattern, high frequency words, color words, number words or direction/survival words are all excellent to use. Use simple grids or make permanent boards. When working 1/1 with a student, have student write phonemic pattern words (ie./ar/ farm, start, sharp, etc.) for one assignment in tutoring notebook. Use as a review for the next lesson.

Swat the Fly: Divide students into 2 teams. Place a starting line about 6 feet from the chalkboard or chart. Provide the first player from each team with a fly swatter (Center of the fly swatter may be cut out, but not necessary.). Write vocabulary words, letters, phoneme patterns (-at, -in, etc.), prefixes, suffixes, sounds which can be represented by different letters (c, k, ck, ch), number/color words, direction/survival words, words for opposites, words for synonyms, etc. Teacher asks questions according to the type of words that are written on the board (prefixes—“I’m looking for a word that means ‘ahead of time’” – pre). Swatter is passed to the next after each round. Score may be kept between teams.
