A New Home for Sandy
by Kylee Hahler, Faulkton School, 3rd Grade
One warm spring day there lived a happy little squirrel named Sandy. Sandy Squirrel lived in a beautiful oak tree in the middle of meadow in the middle of a forest.

Sandy Squirrel absolutely loved her home. She never wanted to leave it. All of her many forest friends lived nearby and her days were filled with chattering, playing and wonderful adventures.
Sandy had just woken up from a long nap. She stepped out of her house to smell the beautiful flowers that surrounded her tree home when she heard a frightening noise.
The sound was coming closer and closer. In fear, Sandy ran out of the meadow and into the forest until she couldn't hear the noise any longer. She waited for the forest to begin to grow dark to return to her home.

Where her home had been, there was only a tree stump and trampled flowers. Sadly, Sandy knew the terrible noise she'd heard had been loggers chopping down trees.
Soon Sandy and all of her forest friends met near the stump. They didn't know what to do. Most of their homes were gone too. The friends knew they would need to find new homes, but there was no place to go in their meadow.

The forest friends chattered about what to do. The next day, Sandy and her forest friends met again. They traveled deeper into the forest looking for new homes. They had decided this would be another great adventure they could share. As they walked, they gathered berries and nuts.

The friends were about to have their lunch by a cave when Sandy looked ahead. Just past the trees, the sun was shining on another meadow. In the middle of the meadow was a beautiful oak tree surrounded by many colorful flowers.
Benny Bear looked back at the cave. Daisy Deer looked at the grassy meadow. Charlie Chipmunk looked at the little hills. Sandy looked at the beautiful oak tree. The friends all smiled at each other. They knew they had found their new homes.
